There’s a beautiful line said in the movie Collateral Beauty and it goes ‘shed your skin, find your life’. Although we can’t physically shed our skin, fashion has given us the power to do so in a different way, through a carefully curetted wardrobe, multitudes of colors, patterns, styles and gorgeous accessories that are the glue that holds it all together. Every new season graces us with new trends. Some are fleeting, while others have the power to stand the test of time, and when these two come together in perfect harmony, that’s when some true style magic happens. As we are now deep into the golden season, it’s time to ‘shed’ our summer skin and treat ourselves to some truly amazing autumn essentials.
Kick things into power gear
Just because autumn can often be gloomy doesn’t mean your wardrobe should reflect the season’s mood. Make a powerful statement with the most powerful color of them all – the mighty red. It can come in the form of gorgeous outerwear, like a seemingly simple and minimalistic trench coat. For those who consider red outerwear a tad too loud, there are, of course, numerous other garments that are slightly more understated but still make a great impact. One such garment is a sleek pair of high-rise wide-leg trousers and the reason they fall under the essential category is the fact that they are highly versatile and can go from casual to ultra-chic as long as you pick the right top and accessories.
Mad about plaid
Every Fashion Week comes with an abundance of different silhouettes, patterns and fabrics. However, the one thing all the designers seem to be on board with is that they are absolutely mad about plaid. This 70s trend has managed to reinvent itself and appear completely fresh and not even the least bit dull. For a look of timeless sophistication, a plaid coat is a definite must-have. It never loses its casual-elegant charm, but what makes it a staple piece is its power of adaptability. It can look like the epitome of casual if accompanied by an oversized sweater and boyfriend jeans, and make you look like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn if it’s completing that perfect LBD.
If fashion shows are to be believed, and they most often are, radiant and minimally ‘decorated’ face will be the dominant look this season. Forget all about those warm eyeshadows, contouring, and precision. This season calls for clean, natural beauty and the best way to achieve this look is by placing focus on great skincare. Start with locking in moisture for a healthy look, and make sure to invite a great purifying activated charcoal mask to join the fun – after all, plumpness begins with cleanliness. Grace your lips with that perfect berry shade, and not much else. Also, don’t worry about precision; the just-kissed look is one of the hottest right now.
Keep it cozy
Autumn also goes by a nickname – sweater weather, and this year is no exception to the rule. Oversized sweaters are still one of the absolute essential pieces, and whether they’ll come in pastel colours or darker, more minimal shades depends solely on your style persona. One thing’s for sure though – in order to be both cozy and stylish, you might want to renew and refresh your sweater collection.
Golden girls, reinvented
From Jason Wu to Tome, numerous new designers, as well as some long-running powerhouses, have presented us with what can only be called the return of golden girls. Now, this might not be an everyday essential, but if you want to make a true impact during those classy cocktail parties or even when going clubbing, a metallic golden dress will definitely do the trick. After all, what is a great party dress if not absolutely essential.
It seems that we will be looking at a very minimal autumn in terms of accessories. Dainty geometric clutches and small bags with great structure and innovative shapes are the hottest accessories of the season. Although it appears that the micro-bag was ruling autumn runways, those more practical of us who still refuse to make compromises regarding style haven’t been forgotten either as brands such as Altuzarra, Balenciaga and Fendi have presented us with bags that won’t only become permanent staples but that also make all our minimal and vintage bag dreams come true. Keep the jewelry chic and minimal, and you’ll be all ready for a very stylish autumn.
